  • Bedum - Fried noodles with peanuts

    Cooking time: 5 min. / 20 min.Difficulty: easyvideo

I have always thought, eating instant curly noodles is just an instant fast food, that we buy in supermarkets and that people in Asia have no idea this kind of food even exists. In Sri Lanka I realized I was wrong. They cook with these instant noodles quite often, just different way than us. Bedum is prepared for special occasions only. New Year, Almsgiving and other holidays.

Before I left to Sri Lanka, my friend Lucka, who loves very spicy food asked me for bringing her some very spicy recipe. Have look at the list of ingredients, and I believe you agree, that I would hardly find a recipe fitting her taste better :) If you do not belong to fans of a spicy food, better skip this recipe

  • Soya meat ball curry

Another great recipe from the range of Sri Lankan curries. Without chicken broth, it is perfect meal for vegetarians and vegans, full of proteins. If you follow the recipe 100%, it is quite spicy. If you do not like it too spicy, better reduce amount of red chili powder and check heat level of garam masala you have available.

I was walking on the train trails, passing a beautiful house made of ground, in front of which kids and dogs were playing. Kids were all smiles and calling at me "hello, what is your name?". So we started chatting, whole family joined us and they were so nice and as a bonus I got invitation for a Sunday lunch. One of the dishes was chicken curry. Most of curries in Sri Lanka are vegetarian. If it is with meat, the most common is the chicken one. And it was amazing!

  • Dhal

    Cooking time: 10 min. / 30 min.Difficulty: easyvideo

The essential dish in Sri Lanka. Locals eat it two, sometimes even three times a day. As most of recipes in Sri Lanka are vegetarian and vegan, lentils are very important source of proteins. Most of dhal recipes I have known seemed too complicated. So this is probably one of the most easy recipes, I was taught by my Sri Lanka family and it is so delicious too.

One of the first curries I learned from grannies in a little house by train tracks in Sri Lanka. I wish I made more shots of the amazing kitchen for the video. But as at the time I just started filming, so you will find them in the newer video recipes and this one is mainly about the recipe :)

Sri Lanka curry could`t do without coconut milk and cream. Before I went to Asia for the first time, I thought, that coconut milk is a ready juice in coconut. But I was wrong :)

About 90% of all Sri Lanka dishes are various kinds of curries. And any kind of curry would be nothing without a good rice. One would think ..... "it just a rice"..., but try to cook it this way and try the red one and you will taste the difference :).
