  • String hoppers - Rice noodles

    Cooking time: 30 min. / 15 min.Difficulty: easyvideo

The most common side dish in Sri Lanka is rice. I would say about 99%. But from time to time you can get local rice noodles, called string hoppers. The reason why they are so rare is probably the hard and long process if you prepare them Sri Lankan way. But the difference compared to the bought ones is huge and worth it!

  • Kottu roti

Another recipe from Sri Lankan street food range. Roti again, but chopped this time, as this is the meaning of the word kottu in Sinhala. So the result is something between pasta and risotto, as everything is chopped very fine. Preparation of this dish is accompanied by the very typical metal rhythmic sounds, each restaurant in Sri Lanka has its own.

  • Jackfruit "kos" with grated coconut

    Cooking time: 10 min. / 13 min.Difficulty: easyvideo

Jackfruit has several stages of ripeness and depending on the stage is used as a fruit or as a vegetable. In this case it is mature one and will be used as vegetable. In Sinhala it is called kos. Final product will be something like potatoes with curd, just more exotic and vegan version of it. We will use jackfruit seeds too, they taste like cooked or baked chestnuts.

  • Onion sambal (salad)

    Cooking time: 5 min. / 0 min.Difficulty: easyvideo

If someone offers to me a salad made of onions, I usually would refuse with thanks. But I made an exception and tried the one in Sri Lanka and it was a good choice. Salad is great and spicy. Not only because of the onions, but because of the heap of chili flakes too. But it is worth it. And not recommended when going for a date ;)
